Two professional tutors bring you tried and tested drawing courses for beginners, those in

need of a refresher or anyone interested in exploring new creative avenues through drawing.

Andrew Fitchett

A painter who trained in Graphic Design, Andrew designed and illustrated in the music business then worked as an Art Director in London’s advertising industry before working as Creative Director for New Media companies.

Andrew is a Senior Short Course Tutor at West Dean College where he has taught a range of drawing and painting courses for 15 years. Andrew also runs his own adult group and individual drawing and painting courses and teaches drawing in schools.

Haydn Cottam 

A painter who trained at St Martens, Haydn exhibits his work internationally, has won prizes at the National Portrait and Mall Galleries and shows at the Catto Gallery. His work is part of the BBC archived National Art Collection.

Haydn was a senior lecturer on a BA illustration course for over 20 years, has specialized as a drawing tutor and taught numerous visual arts subjects including painting, print and 3D to puppetry and theatre design.

Drawing for beginners 1 day

An introduction to four key techniques that will improve your drawing skills and point you in the right direction for further self-motivated improvement. A hands-on course working from still-life arrangements with an emphasis on learning through practice. Suitable for beginners and those in need of a refresher.

Observational Drawing - Accuracy and likeness - 2 days

A refresher of key techniques that will improve your observational drawing skills with additional specific exercises to help consolidate your understanding of each technique and how to apply them to enhance your drawings and your enjoyment. A hands-on course working with still life arrangements and supplementary exercises. There is an emphasis on learning through practice with a focus on personal, creative development. Suitable for all abilities.

Still Life, a Personal Narrative

Students make a series of still life drawings from objects which have some meaning to them. They will create a personal narrative through observation, composition and mark making. Each student will produce a finished drawing after completing a series of exercises which are designed to explore and expand the representational and narrative possibilities of their chosen subjects through drawing.

Portrayal. Storytelling through Portraiture

Students will pair up, and after an informal introduction and conversation, will make a series of studies of each other, which will explore notions of picture making and portrayal. This will be followed by a more developed portrait drawing which tells a story about their subject. This narrative may develop as the work is produced.
